Ian Somerhalder had a blast filming “Lost.” He just wishes that would have shown more in his portrayal of Boone on ABC’s deserted island drama.

During his expletive-filled Q&A Saturday at Wizard World at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Somerhalder – who has gone on to star in The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” which is now entering its seventh season — sounded like he would have played Boone – who died in the first season of “Lost” — differently if given the chance to do it all over again.

“I often think back to why they killed me on ‘Lost,’” Somerhalder told the audience. “People like to see conflicted people, but through humor. Humor is a medicine for pain. It’s a Band-Aid. Boone, unfortunately, and this was my fault as an actor, Boone was a little (expletive). Boone was a spoiled, rich little bastard who couldn’t smile to save his life.

“I’m pretty funny, as far as my friends go. They say I’m typically a pretty funny person. Why on earth, living in Hawaii, having so much fun, skinny dipping with our cast three days a week, why didn’t Boone (expletive) smile more?”

Somerhalder said he made sure not to make the same mistake when he was given the role of vampire Damon Salvatore on “The Vampire Diaries.” But that wasn’t the only thing he picked up from his short time on “Lost.”

“Sawyer is a great deal of inspiration (for Damon),” Somerhalder said. “Josh Holloway is an amazing actor. Sawyer is a really great character — one of the most conflicted, funniest dudes ever. And I feel that way on ‘Vampire Diaries.’ At the end of the day, not to demean the material, I’ve ever said this to Peter Roth, the president of Warner Bros. television, this is a soapy teen vampire drama – like melodrama (expletive). So the least I could do is have fun, bring a lot of edge to it.”
