Every actor on the planet probably envies Ian Somerhalder.

Well, maybe not George Clooney. But most of the rest of them.

Somerhalder co-stars on the CW series “The Vampire Diaries,” and he will revisit “Lost” several times during its upcoming sixth and final season. On the film front, he has wrapped the indie comedy “How To Make Love to a Woman” with Krysten Ritter and Jenna Jameson, and, if all goes according to plan, will shoot a psychological thriller entitled “Cradlewood” this spring.

“It’s such a great moment in time for me,” Somerhalder said, speaking by telephone from the “Vampire Diaries” set in Atlanta. “It’s very cool. I’m very lucky, very grateful. As far as ‘Vampire Diaries’ and ‘Lost,’ there’s such great storytelling going on on both shows, and they’re such amazing experiences. I’m just really happy to be a part of them.”

Fans of “Lost” will recall that Somerhalder co-starred as Boone Carlyle, who, along with his stepsister Shannon (Maggie Grace) and several dozen others, survived the crash of Oceanic Airways Flight No. 815 onto a mysterious island. Boone became something of a protege to the enigmatic Locke (Terry O’Quinn), but he didn’t make it past the first season, perishing in the episode “Do No Harm” and serving as proof that no one, not even a major character, was safe.

Of course, dead doesn’t mean gone on “Lost,” and Boone popped up a few more times in Season 1 and later on either in hallucinations or in flashbacks. He’ll return to the “Lost” fold for the sixth-season premiere, “LA X” – that’s not a typo, there’s a space in there – set to air Tuesday on ABC.

“The first day back was great,” Somerhalder said enthusiastically. “It was like a time warp, if you will. I was just so happy to be with my friends. Some of these people are like family. To see them still maintaining this level of excellence five years later, and still making it happen and still loving every minute of it, it was so fun.

“I got there and I think I was on the ground for 27 hours. In that time I got to see two of my super-close friends, Matthew Fox and Josh Holloway, who are like brothers, and their families, got to go to a couple of my favorite restaurants, shot what I needed to shoot, and still (went) snorkeling at my favorite spot.”

How much of Boone will we see? Somerhalder may film as many as three episodes, but he isn’t revealing whether Boone will turn up in the flesh or as a ghost, in the present, in the past or both.

“I am in the season opener,” Somerhalder said. “I don’t know what to make yet of what they’re doing with Boone. It’s ‘Lost.’ You just can’t tell. You can’t tell where they’re going. I thought I knew where they were going in Season 1, and I was very wrong.

“I’m just grateful I get to go back, that (producers) Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse agreed to do it, and that the line producers of (“Lost” and “Vampire Diaries”) made it work,” he said, “because it’s difficult to get an actor back and forth from Atlanta to Hawaii when both shows are in production.

“So I’m excited to see where this is going.”

Meanwhile as the season progresses on “The Vampire Diaries,” viewers will watch as Damon spends more time with Elena and as he pursues what it is he’s ultimately after. Fans can also expect to see scenes set in the 1860s that will feature Damon and Katherine (Dobrev), the captivating vampire who decades ago turned the Salvatores into bloodsuckers.
